Georgia GHSA WBGT Policy

GHSA By-law 2.67 makes WBGT-based practice modification mandatory year-round, in all sports, during periods of high heat — with a hard rule that catches many programs off guard: the reading must come from an on-site instrument.

Georgia is a device-only state

The by-law's wording: "A scientifically-approved instrument that measures the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature must be utilized at each practice". Readings must be taken at least every 30 minutes beginning 30 minutes before practice, and monitors must be calibrated at least every 2 years.

  • Use discretion for intense or prolonged exercise; watch at-risk participants closely.
  • At least 3 separate rest breaks each hour, minimum 4 min each.
ORANGE 87.0 - 89.9
  • Maximum practice time: 120 min.
  • At least 4 separate rest breaks each hour, minimum 4 min each.
  • Football: helmet, shoulder pads and shorts only.
RED 90.0 - 92.0
  • Maximum practice time: 60 min.
  • At least 20 min of rest breaks distributed through each hour.
  • Football: no protective equipment.
  • No conditioning activities.
BLACK Over 92.0
  • No outdoor workouts. Delay practice until a cooler WBGT is reached.

What counts as practice

Practice time runs from when players report to the practice area until they leave it. Conditioning (weights, sprints, timed runs) counts as practice time — including "voluntary" workouts. Walk-throughs are separate: max one hour, no equipment, no conditioning, no contact.
